Shelly Wolfrey

Regional Registered Nurse | Rigolet, Labrador

I started my career in long-term care after nursing school in Corner Brook and was excited for the opportunity to come back home to Rigolet. Working in rural medicine, you have to learn to trust your judgment and rely on coworkers. We’re collaborative on just about anything.

Outside of work, there’s this special sense of community and adventure too. I get to balance a job I love with being so close to natural beauty on the coast of our province, whether spending time at my cabin or fishing in the summertime.

Living in a remote area can feel pretty intimate sometimes, but that’s all a part of the charm, whether you’re from here or not. It’s what draws us in and keeps us.

I’m proud to be from such a special part of the province. My mentor at work was actually my nurse from the time I was a baby on through to adulthood! I feel lucky to say she’s truly been with me since the early days, and that I’m already finding my own way for mentoring new students. I hope more people take a chance on rural and remote medicine like we have. You won’t regret it. Read more stories from health care professionals
