Dr. Mark Abel
Infectious Disease Physician | St. John's, NL
Anytime I share my reasons for moving to St. John’s, I’m often met with approving head nods and big smiles. Probably because it just makes a lot of sense. I grew up in Nova Scotia, went away to Ireland for medical school, and completed my post-graduate training in the U.S., specifically Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with my first years as a physician in Maine. Some would say I have a thing for coastal living.
I felt an immediate sense of comfort and familiarity when we moved here. It's easy to picture this as the place to build my career and raise my family.
Adjusting to practicing medicine back in Canada has also brought up that familiar feeling. It's been easy to find my footing and collaborate with like-minded colleagues. I’m very grateful to have the autonomy for giving all of my patients the best care possible. Compared to working in the U.S., I get to do what I’ve been trained to do, plus a little more.
